Bas van Fraassen is a Dutch-American born in the once occupied German Netherlands on April 4th, 1941. He and his family emigrated to Edmonton, in Western Canada. This was due to his father, him being a steamfitter, he had been forced to work at a factory in Hamburg.

Bas can Fraassen had released a book in 1980 named, The Scientific Image. In it he had writing about Constructive empiricism which is his version of scientific anti-realism. As stated by Fraassen, "Science aims to give us theories which are empirically adequate; and acceptance of a theory involves as belief only that it is empirically adequate" (1980, 12). This book is widely accredited with its rehabilitating scientific anti-realism.

Bas van Fraassen won the Lakatos Award in 1986, this is awarded annually to someone who has made great contribution to the philosophy of science community in the form of a book published in English within the last six years. He had received the award for his book "The Scientific Image."
