Atomic theory

Atomic Theory: New and Old

  • Period: 322 to

    Aristotle

Aristotle lived for 384 BC to 322 BC. He disagreed with Democritus' idea about atoms, and he believed that atoms did not exist. However, he had the same ideas about matter as Democritus did.
  • Period: 370 to 460

    Democritus

Democritus lived between the times of 460 BC to 370 BC. He was the first peron to suggest that matter could not be infinitely divided. He came up with the word Atomos to describe the tiny particles that make up matter.
  • Period: to

    John Dalton

John Dalton lived from 1766 to 1844. He agreed with Democritus' ideas about matter, however he revised them according to his scientific records. He believed "Atoms are the smallest particles of matter and are indivisible and indestructible.
  • Period: to

    Physicist J.J. Thompson

J.J. Thompson designed a series of CRT experiments at Cambridge to determine the ratio of the particle’s charge to its mass.
  • Cathode ray tube discovery

    Cathode ray tube discovery
The Cathode ray tube is a vacuum tube containing one or more electron guns, and a phosphorescent screen used to view images.
  • Period: to

    Ernest Rutherford

Ernest Rutherford studied how positively charged α-particles interacted with solid matter.
  • When the electron was discoverd

    When the electron was discoverd
In 1897, J. J. Thomson succeeded in measuring the mass of cathode rays, showing that they consisted of negatively charged particles smaller than atoms, the first "subatomic particles", which were later named electrons.
  • Is when the CRT tube was first used for what is known as television

Is when the CRT tube was first used for what is known as television
In 1907, Russian scientist Boris Rosing used a CRT in the receiving end of an experimental video signal to form a picture. He managed to display simple geometric shapes onto the screen, which marked the first time that CRT technology was used for what is now known as television.
