Atomic Theories Timeline

  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
John Dalton, known as the 'Father or Modern Chemisty', had many therioes. He first opened up that atoms and their structers can help us predict the properties of matter. He had others, which include that atoms can combine to form new substances (called a chemical reaction), and when Elements react, their atoms combine in simple ratios.
  • Dimitri Mendeleev

    Dimitri Mendeleev
Dimitri Mendeleev, probably the most well known name in chemistry, gave chemisty a very big boost. He was the one to create the periodic table, which conists of every element ever discovered. The periodic table is one of chemistrys greatest works, and it tell chemists any elements weight, number of protons, number of newtons, what the element is classified as, and MANY more.
  • JJ Thompson

    JJ Thompson
J.J. Thopmson, the founder of electrons, found them using a special tube and while doing that he also noticed charge/mass of an electron. He calculated it to be 1.759 x 108 Coulboms/gram. He helped us get a better undersatnding of the atom, and was the first one to find out that those particles had postive and negative charges, now called as protons and electrons.
  • Ernest Rutherford (cont)

He is also famous for the first diagram of the atom, the Rutherford Atomic Diagram.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Ernest Rutherford discoverd the proton while undergoing an nitrogen gas experinment While he was doing this he formed a great collision and one of the nitrogen atom broke down and with that he noticed the patricle found from the nucleas; the proton. Rutherford had MANY contributions to modern chemisty, and some of his great works are that he found out that electrons are grouped around the nucleus, and also discovered the flow of positive and negative electrons in electricity.
  • Neils Bohr

    Neils Bohr
Neils Bohr discoverd that electrons move around the nucleus in 'paths'. He came up with the idea that electrons moving in those 'paths' can hop to one another and go past each other. He was the first one to start studying how electrons move around the nucleus, and we still follow this basic rule in chemisty today.
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick
James Chadwick discovered the neutron by performing radiation and noticed that some particles had no charge. So he called them Neutrons. Not only did he discover newtons, but he studyed alot in gamma and raditation. He also won the noble prize later in his life.
