Ashikaga Takauji was born at Ayabe, Kyoto, Japan.

Ashikaga was sent by the Hojo government to fortify Kyoto's defenses. The Hojo government's control of the country outside Kamakura had reduced causing Takauji to switch sides and raise an army against the Kamakura government with the support of other warriors causing the Hojo clan to fall apart.

Takauji betrays emperor Go Daigo II and forces him to abdicate in favor of their candidate, a few months later he escaped and flees to South Yoshino insisting his abdication was wrong and he is still the rightful ruler of Japan.

Nitta Yoshisada (Takauji's rival) managed to turn emperor Go Daigo II and his cheif advisers against Takauji. Takauji was then charged by emperor Go Daigo II for trying to establish an independent territorial base in the east. This began a battle between Takauji and Yoshisada. Takauji quickly allied with a rival branch of the imperial family who wanted the throne and the issue escalated to a dynastic dispute over imperial succession.

The start of the Muromachi period also known as the Ashikaga period begins. Takauji receives title of shogun and establishes the Ashikaga shogunate.
