Haileab was born in Seraye, Eritrea in 1934, and as a child was moved into a monastery with Coptic Christian Monks.

Haileab took a test to become a physician and scored 84%. He then trained as a advanced dresser, which did everything a physician had done.

Due to a Civil war in Ethiopia , the Asgedom family left their country for a refugee umsagata camp in Sudan.

The World Relief foundation found a place for the family in Chicago. The family passed all the necessary tests and all 6 of them arrived in America.

Mawi was challenged educationally to succeed, physically to win the races, and mentally to go shoot for the stars and become the National Honor Society President.

1997 was the last Christmas,they spent together, his junior year at Harvard. He was a man who spoke six languages, translated for new refugees at Pubic Aid and Schools, and received a World Relief Refugee Certification. Yet, like his son Tewolde was killed by a drunk driver.
