    The first ancient Olympics was in 776 BC but most believe that it was way back before 776 BC. Perhaps the historical Olympics included less categories than the whole current Olympics, in which only men were permitted to compete. Competitors from just about any Greek state were able to qualify as soon as they completed the entry requirements.
