Battle of Bunker Hill
On the night of June 16, 1775, a detail of American troops acting under orders from ARTEMAS WARD moved out of their camp, carrying picks, shovels, and guns. They entrenched themselves on a rise located on Charleston Peninsula overlooking Boston. Their destination: BUNKER HILL.
From this hill, the rebels could bombard the town and British ships in Boston Harbor. But Ward's men misunderstood his order. -

Washington fights to a draw at Battle of Monmouth
Indecisive battle near Monmouth Courthouse, New Jersey, on June 28, 1778. American troops under General George Washington fought British troops under General Henry Clinton. The British had left Philadelphia en route to New York. The Americans were pursuing from Valley Forge, their goal to stop the British advance. -

The Treaty of Alliance between France and the United States was concluded at Paris, February 6, 1778 and ratified by Congress May 4, 1778. The treaty provided for a defensive alliance to aid France should England attack, and that neither France nor the United States would make peace with England until the independence of the United States was recognized. The knowledge of the Alliance came to Washington on May Day, 1778. -
