After her work in the settlement movement of New York, Alice travels to England to study social work at the Woodbroke Settlement. She meets the Pankhurst women and becomes an active suffragist. She is arrested frequently, rebelling in jail by going on hunger strikes, for which she is force-fed.

Alice along with fellow suffragists, is arrested and sent to Occoquan Workhouse. Where she is force-fed and met with brutality after staging a hunger strike. Workers attempt to place her in an insane asylum, the public discovers the torture and releases Paul.
