Driver was born on November 19, 1983, in San Diego, California, the son of Nancy Wright (née Needham), a paralegal, and Joe Douglas Driver. He has Dutch, English, German, Irish and Scottish ancestry.

When Driver was seven years old, he moved with his older sister and mother to his mother's hometown Mishawaka, Indiana in 1990. Adam was raised a Baptist and sang choir at a church his father was a minister at.

Adam Driver applies to the Julliard School for Drama, but was not accepted.

After high school, Adam worked as a door-to-door salesman selling Kirby vacuum cleaners and as a telemarketer for a basement waterproofing company and Ben Franklin Construction.

Shortly after 9/11, Adam Driver would enlist to the United States Marine Corp. To which he was assigned to Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines as an 81mm mortar man.

Adam served for two years and eight months in the Marines before fracturing his sternum while mountain biking. He was medically discharged with the rank of Lance Corporal

Driver attends the University of Indianapolis for about a year.

Whilst working at the Target Distribution Center in Indianapolis, driver is told that he got accepted into Julliard School of Arts.

Whilst in School, Driver was a member of the Drama Division's Group 38 from 2005-2009, where he would meet his future wife, Joanne Tucker. Driver graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2009.

Driver and his partner, Joanne Tucker, create Arts in The Armed Forces, which is a non-profit based in Brooklyn, New York that brings arts programming to active-duty service members, veterans, military support staff of the United States and their families around the world free of charge.

After Graduating Julliard School, Driver moves to New York City.

Just before making his debut in Broadway, Driver would work as a busboy and a waiter, while also appearing in several television shows and short films.

Driver gets one of his first roles in theatre, having a role in a play called "The Retributions." playing "Dov Palinsky." The play is about a group of Jewish freedom fighters who attempt to sabatoge German forces during WW2.

Driver gets a role in a play called "The Forest." by Alexander Nemerov. Playing a man named Bulanov.

Driver gets a part in George Bernard Shaw's "Mrs. Warren's Profession." Playing "Frank Gardner." The play is about a former prostitute, now a madam, who attempts to come to terms with her disapproving daughter.

Driver has a role in Angels in America, A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Part 1: Millennium Approaches. Playing a man named Louis Ironsin. (And Part 2 which occurred in the same day.) The play is sort of a metaphor for political issues and the AIDS epidemic while meditating on the themes of change and loss.

Driver gets his second broadway role just a year and 6 days after his debut. In a play called "Man and Boy" playing a man named "Basil Anthony." The play is a study of a ruthless, sociopathic businessman, his inability to love and the impact of this on others.

In 2012, Driver starred in a major off-broadway play called, "Look Back in Anger" playing a working-class Welsh houseguest named "Cliff". The play focuses on the life and marital struggles of an intelligent and educated but disaffected young man of working-class, Jimmy Porter, and his competent yet impassive upper middle-class wife Alison.

In 2013, Driver marries his longtime partner, Joanne Tucker. To which he would have a son with, who's been kept out of the public for two years.

Jumping all the way to 2019, Driver stars in his most recent Theater performance to date. Playing “Pale” in a Broadway play called “Burn This”. The play is about three young people, two dancers and a copywriter, who share a Soho loft. Driver would also receive a nomination for the “Tony Award for Best Actor in Play”. Unfortunately, he would not win.
