  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
    Dred Scott tried suing for his families freedom by saying his time spent living in free territories left him emmancipated. The Supreme Court ruled since slaves or their descendants were not citizens they could not sue in court. The Citizenship Clause eventually overruled this and gave a broad definition of citizenship.

  • Proposed

    Proposed
    The fourteenth amendment was proposed. It included three major clauses and several others dealing with the Confederacy. The Citizenship, Due Process, and Equal Protection Clause were included.
  • First State Ratifies

    First State Ratifies
    Connecticut was the first to ratify the newly proposed amendments to get the ball rolling.
  • Adopted to the Constitution

    Adopted to the Constitution
    The fourteenth amendment is added to the Constitution after South Carolina is the twetny-eighth state to ratify.
  • Civil Rights Cases

    Civil Rights Cases
    A group of five like cases which the Supreme Court decided that COngress lacked the authority in their decision because of the fifth clause in the fourteenth amendment. This clause says "Congress has power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article"
  • Lochner v. New York

    Lochner v. New York
    Due Process Clause states that local and state government cannot deprive a person of life, liberty, or property without certain steps. Lochner, a bakery owner, allowed an employee to clock in more hours than the 60 hours New York allowed. Court declared state couldn't dictate maximum weekly work hours.
  • Perry v. United States

    Perry v. United States
    The fourth clause in the amendment stated the U.S. or states would not pay for the loss of slaves or pay of debts. Perry v. United States dealt with French and English banks loaning money to the South in which the Supreme Court ruled voiding a government bond went beyon their power.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The equal protection clause of the 14th amendment played a large role in the Brown v. Board of Education court case. After original ratification races used seperate facilities as long as they were "equal." The Supreme Court later ruled schools were no longer to be segregated because blacks educational buildings were never equal to the whites.
  • Jefferson Davis

    Jefferson Davis
    After a 2/3 vote by Congress Jefferson Davis's service ban was removed. The third clause of the Amendment gave restrictions on participation in any vector of the U.S. if you had been part of the rebellion.
  • Ohio

    Ohio
    In 2003 Ohio was the last of the original 37 states of that time to amend to fourteenth amendment. They had previously rescinded it on January 15, 1868.
