After Japan's defeat communist forces led by Mao Zedong had fought a civil war with Nationalists lead by Jiang Jieshi. The communists defeated the Nationalists and they fled up to Tiawan. Vietnam Conflict
Vietnam fighters had raided on Northern Vietnamese islands in the golf of Tonkin. The following day the north Viets had attaked on the U.S Navy ship the Maddox because they thought they assisted in the northern attacks on them the day before. The Maddox thought they were attacked a second time by the Northern Viets again but it was said it could have been sonar malfunction.
