  • Civil War in Nicaragua

    Between 1927- 1933 a war errupted against liberal rebels lead by General Jose Maria Moncada and the governement under Diaz, who received militay assistance from the US . Angry with American interferance in Nicaraguan affairs Sandino joined the war engaging in Gorilla Actions .
  • Mao Zedong takes control of China

    Founder of the Peoples Republic of China
  • Korean War

    Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided.
  • Vietnam War

    November 1, 1955, to April 30, 1975. The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other anti-communist nations.
  • Soviet Invasion of Hungary

    Part of the Cold war, it was a spontaneous revolt against the governement and its policies . There were rallys and demonstrations and police attacked.. In an effort to win autonomy from the soviet union, free elections, national independence and the return of Imre Nagy to power, the army was called out, but handed over thier arms to the demostrators and joined the uprising.
  • Fidel Castro takes over Cuba

    Fidel Castro established the first communist state in the western hemisphere, Cuba. With Castro still in charge it is one of the worlds fewest surviving communist countries .
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Also known as La Batalla De Giron , it was an unsuccessful attempt by CIA trained forces to invade Southern Cuba to overthrow the Cuban Governement of Fidel Castro .
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    photographs revealed soviet missles under construction in Cuba, John F. Kennedy announced the discovery and along with Premier Nakita Khrushchev , war was averted.
  • Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia

    Warsaw Pact forces and the soviet union invaded Czechoslovakia, Approx 500,000 troops poured across the boarder. The invasion was meticulously planned . A special plane with plainclothes agents quickly secured the airport . The operation was codenamed Danube. The invasion successfully stopped liberalization and strengthened the communist party.
  • SALT Treaty Talks

    Talks between US and Soviet Union to negotiate agreements to place limits and restraints on armaments .
  • Nixon Visits China

    On February 21st, 1972, President Nixon arrived in Peking for a seven-day stay. No major agreements were reached during the summit, It was an attempt to establish level relations with China. Its occurrence brought in a new world of diplomacy for the United States.
  • Revolution in Iran

    The first major demonstrations against the Shah began in January 1978. Between August and December 1978 strikes and demonstrations shocked the country. It began with opposition against Mohammed Reza Shah, lead by Ayatollah Khomeini who distributed messages through music cassetts smuggled into Iran and then duplicated all around the world. This lead to the Iranian Revolution.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    The Soviet invasion, intially involved an estimated 30,000 troops, a force that ultimately grew to 100,000. Russian paratroopers landed in Kabul. Thousands of Afghan musslims joined the Guerilla forces on a holy mission for Allah , they wanted to overthrow the Amin government. ( Holy War) . russians claimed to have been invited in by the Amin government and they were not invading the country.

    Although Iraq maintaned that Iran had been engaging in attacks on iraqi towns since September 4th, It officially began on Sept. 22, 1980, with Iraq and air invasions of western Iran, Many beleived that Suddam Hussein invaded Iran on a personal basis. Just another phase of the ancient conflict of border disputes. although Iraq maintained that Iran had been engaging in attacks on Iraqi towns since Sept. 4.
  • Soviet Union Falls Apart

    In Early 1985, economic growth was at a standstill . Failed attempts at reform lead to discontent in the Baltic Republics and Eastern Europe.
  • Mikhail Gorbachev takes control of USSR

    Becoming the leader in 1985 , he made efforts to improve the soviet unions foreign relations . He and Ronald Reagan together helped end the cold war. Mikhail won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. It ws a great erra for the USSR .
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall fell bringing east germany and west germany together as a single free nation.
