Nuclear Arms Race and Dentente
Nuclear Arms Race started in 1949 when the Soviet Union had developed nuclear weapons. Then the United States and Societ Union both made the Hydrogen bomb(worse than the Nuclear bomb). In 1969 Stragetic Arms Limitation was created to limit the number of nuclear weapons each side held. 1972 &1979 both signed the agreement. Korean Conflict
Korea was divided on the 38th parallel after Japan's defeat. In 1950 north korea Kim II Sung wanted to reunit Korea. North Korea attcked in that year taking over most of the South. North Korea father advanced until U.N forces them to stop. U.S caputred the north-south rail lines to stop north kores from the supply on food. and ammunition. Success alarmed China, they sent thousands of troops to help N.K, turned into a stalmate. 1953 both sides signed a armistice-held for the rest of the cold war. -
Vietnam Conflict
Struggle for Vietnam became part of the Cold War. Americans did not want the domino theory to happen. Hi Chi Minh was still determined to unite Vietnam under communist rule. U.S only sent supply then troops causing it a Cold War conflict. 1964 S.V conducted raid on N.V. US began bombing targets in the North- China and Soviet Union sent aid to help the North. American leaders decided they needed to leave Vietnam. Pairs Peace Accord-to cease fire. 2 years after the North conquered the South. -
Warsaw Pact
In response to the NATO the Soviet Union formed the Warsaw Pact. It consisted of the Soviet Union and 7 other satellites. Unlike the NATO they Soviets used this more to keep their satellites in order. Seperated Eastern and Western Europe. East was Soviet-dominated and West was communists. -
Soviet Union Falls
The Soviet Union was doomed. Soviets had gained more freedom of speech. Government crtics were freed from prison. Soviet Union rebiult its shattered industries after WWII but it still had problems. Agriculture was very unproductive Russia had to import grain to feed its people. Many things remained rare. -
Berlin Wall
in 1961, East Germany bulit a wall to keep those in from escaping to the West to join the communist. The wall was made of massive concrete, topped in with barbed wire and patrolled by guards. -
Communist Cuba/Missile Crisis
Castro had planned to rebell against the dictator. In 1959 his guerilla army led to victory. In 1961 President John F. Kennedy supported an invasion(The Bay of Pigs Invasion). n 1962 Soviet Union sent missisles to Cuba, JFK responded by setting up a naval blockade. The soviet Premier agreed to remove the missiles. -

Soviet-supported Afghan governemnet had tried to modernize the nation. Warlords took up arms agianst it and Soviet Troops moved in. The battle provoked trouble for the Soviets at home. -

Soviet Union tried to maintain control over Eastern European satelites by force. Gorbachev introduced glasnost and perstrokia the Europeans started to seek greater freedom. The soviet Union started to crumble and the Eastern Europeans demanded Soviet domination. And they got it.
