In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea.The United States helped out South Korea and stopped them at the Pusan Perimeter. Then South Korea pushed back North Korea to the Yalu River. The war soon turned into a stalemate.

Nationalism lost popularity because it led to ecconomic hardship while Communism was redistibuting land to poor people. Zedong built a Communist one-party totalitarian state in the People's Republic of China. From 1958 to 1960 Mao urged people to make a superhuman effort to increase farm and industrial out put. This was known as the Great Leap Forward. It failed because they produced low-qaulity goods.

By 1953, both sides had hydrogen bombs which are more powerful than atomic bombs. This created a "balance of terror". Both sides knew that if they started bombing each other, both sides would be destroyed. People lived in constant fear of nuclear doom. To prevent this, they had Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.

In 1954 it became part of the Cold War. They agreed to split Vietname. The north was controlled by communist government and the south was noncommunist and led by Ngo Dinh Diem, The Americans believed that if communism won it would sread to everywhere. They called this the domino theory.

Finally, the United States were tired of fighting so they signed the Paris Peace Accord in 1973. The north ended up beating the south and they reunited in 1976/

    After World War 2 Berlin was split. West Berlin was Democratic and East Berlin was Communist. People in East Berlin, unhappy with their lives were just walking over to West Berlin for a better life. It was very easy to switch from East Berlin to West Berlin. Because of this, East Berlin built a wall to keep the people of East Berlin in so that the Communism would remain strong. While the wall was being built people still tried to switch sides and go to West Berlin.

In China, they didn't have any political reforms, they worked to make communism stronger. Vietnam opened itself to the world and established diplomatic relations with the United States. North Korea refused reforms. Since Cuba didn't get a lot of help from the Soviet and America still was crippling them, their economy deteriorated. The Soviet Union lost a log of power.

East Germany blocked out Soviet publications and allowed their people to watch TV broadcasts from West Germany. This showed them how bad they really had it.
