    NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. They were set up in 1949. The U.S., Canada, and most Western European nations. They agreed to fight together in the event that any of them were attacked by the Soviet Union. U.S. is the most powerful member and it dominated the group and has kept the large military presence on european soil.

    The most terrafying thing of the Cold War was the aspect of the arms race which began at the end of World War II. At first the U.S. was the only nuclear power. By 1953 Both sides developed Hydrogen Bombs, which are much more powerful than atom bombs. Each side wanted to be able to deter the other side from launching its nuclear wepons. The result was a 'Balance of Terror". Later to reduce the treat of nuclear war the two side met at disarmamet talks.

    In 1969 the U.S. and the Soviet Union began Strategic Arms Limitations Talks. It limited both sides nuclear wepons held by each side. One of these agreements limited anti-ballistic missles or missles that could shoot down other missles from hostile countries. By late 1968 Many nations signed the Nuclear Non-Profliferation Treaty. This agreed that all the nations stop developing nuclear wepons and to stop the spread of nuclear weapons

    Communist Cuba and Missle Crisis

    In the 1950s Fidel Castro organized an armed rebellion against the corrupt dictator who then ruled Cuba. Castro led his guerrilla army to victory and set about transforming his country. Castro supported the Soviet Union. Castro severly restricted Cubans political freedom. The U.S. attempted to bring down communist regime. In 1961 President John F. Kennedy supported the invasion attempt by U.S. trained Cuban exiles. The U.S. imposed a trade embargo on Cuba that remains in effect today.
