    On this day the US market plunged 22% in a single day. Worst then the crash in 1929, the market plunge after 9/11, and even the 2008 financial crisis. Because computerized trading was so new, issues with accelerated trade orders speed up market drops which led to the creation of circuit breakers. These were intended to halt trading when stocks fall to fast so that another event such as this does not happen again.

    The deadliest domestic terrorist attack in US history. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols bomb the Alfred P. Murray Federal Building in Oklahoma City with a truck bomb. Killing 168 people including 19 children.

    The worst attack on U.S. soil since the Japanese bombed Pearl harbor. 19 Islamist extremist hijacked 4 passenger aircraft crashing two of them into the World Trade Center Towers and one into the Pentagon killing nearly 3,000 people. The 4th aircraft crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to regain control.
