    - Unbeknownst to the family, a lost radioactive device without its protective shielding, was nearby

    • By April 29, the 10-year old boy dies
    • Boy received the highest dose, primarily due to his direct contact with the cobalt-60

    • In early 1962, a privately owned radiography equipment storage facility was broken into
    • Among the stolen items were radiation therapy devices containing highly radioactive isotope of cobalt, specifically cobalt-60
    • These devices were used for medical purposes, such as cancer treatment
    • Likely unaware of the dangerous nature of the material they stole, the thieves dismantled the equipment and sold it as scrap metal
  • Investigation

    Investigation
    • Mother passed on July 19th, 1962
    • Fetus did not survive
    • Medical experts begin investigation
  • Lost and Found

    Lost and Found
    • Following the mother's death, the capsule was found and removed from the house
    • By then it was too late to help save the rest of the family
    • Entire family experienced all phases of Acute Radiation Syndrome
