    Battle of Midway

    Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the US navy decisively defeated the Japanese Navy in the Battle of Midway. The poor strategic decision of the Japanese allowed the US to wipe out much of the Japanese navy and aircraft. This battle is credited as the turning point of the war in the pacific.
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower takes Control in Europe

    in 1942, Dwight D. Eisenhower took control as the supreme allied commander of all European forces. Eisenhower commanded his troops well and led the allied forces to victory in the European theatre.
  • Operation Overlord (D-Day)

    over 150,000 allied troops land on the beaches of Normandy, France. The troops soon liberated Paris, and moved towards Germany.

    Atomic Bombs

    The United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima and on the city of Nagasaki in 1945. The bombs killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people. The bombings are still very controversial but brought an end to World War II.

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO was established as a military alliance between 28 European and 2 American nations. Nato was established to maintain peace among nations in the aftermath of World War II.

    Korean War

    The Korean War, Fought between communist North Korea and South Korea (backed by the United Nations, mostly the US). The war ended when an armistice agreement was signed on July 27, 1953. The agreement created a demilitarized zone between the nations. The two countries are technically still at war, and tensions still flare.
