Each midget submarine had a crew of two people and had to maneuver through the slightly constructed anti-submarine net. Japanese forces landed on Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea attempting to attack the Australian and American Allies. At first, the Japanese advanced from East to West throughout the land without very many casualties. Over the next two days, the RAAF struck their supply base on the beach and drove them back outwards to the Gama River.
