After reading the article published in the Anchorage Daily News, Jim Gallien called Roger Ellis to tell im that he knew the dead hiker. He told him that he had given him a ride to the trail and could give him information.

Gallien gives troopers information about the hiker. He tells them his name was Alex and that he was from South Dakota. He remembers this information from when Alex told him during their drive to the Stampede Trail.

After recieving the information from Wayne Westerburg they begin to search South Dakota for family of the hiker. They thougth they found someone but it then proved to be false. (2)

A man by the name of Wayne Westerburg was listening to the radio when he heard them talking about a dead hiker in Alaska. the description fit for a man that used to work for Wayne. His name was Alex and A;aska was where he was heading.

Wayne Westerburg gave officials McCandless's Social Security number.

Wayne finds the W-4 forms that McCandless filled out when he was with him.

Wayne Westerburg provides officials with the hikers real name, Chris McCandless.

Between the 13th and the 17th authorities are able to take the SS number to track down his hometown. They then begin to search in Virginia to try to find family. (2)

Sam McCandless, Chris's brother, recieves a call from authorities informing him that they have found a body and they think it may be Chris.

Sam identified photos of the hiker to be Chris.

Sam drove to Maryland to visit his parents and share the news.
