    Battle of Moscow

    The Germans were attempting to capture Moscow, the Russian capital. The Blitzkrieg plowed through the Red Army, nearing close to the capital city. The Red Army started to crumble. However, so did the Nazis. More than 100,000 men and more than 50% of their equipment was destroyed a month into the war. The Russians ended up pushing the Nazis back and defending their capital.
  • Battle of Midway

    The Battle of Midway was fought between the Japanese and Americans. It took place in the Pacific Ocean. The two sides used aerial warfare in order to try to defeat the other. 3,057 Japanese people died from this battle. 307 Americans died in the battle.

    Battle of Stalingrad

    The Battle of Stalingrad took place between the Nazis and the Soviets. It occurred in Southern Russia. The German Air Force, Luftwaffe, destroyed much of the civilization. Nearly 2 million people died in total. The Soviets won and this battle was a major turning point in the war for the Allies.
  • D-Day

    D-Day is also known as the Battle of Normandy. It resulted in the Allied powers liberating Western Europe from Nazi control. Approximately 156,000 Canadian, French, and American troops landed on the French coast. The majority of the fighting took place on the beaches. This battle is known as the beginning of the end of the war.

    Battle of Iwo Jima

    The Battle of Iwo Jima stemmed from the US wanting to set up a base near the Japanese coast. Three US marine divisions landed on the island but were met by approximately 23,000 Japanese troops. The Japanese were located in tunnels and caves, making it somewhat harder for the US to get to them. However, after a month of fighting, the US was able to wipe out the Japanese and set up a base on the coast. This battle is where the legendary picture of the US troops raising the flag came from.
