Operation Barbarossa
Operation Barbarossa was the invasion of the Soviet Union with over 4 million troops. Adolf Hitler wanted to counqer the USSR because they had one the largest armies in the world. They managed to get some parts like Ukraine but were defeated over and over again trying to get into Moscow. Eventually they had to retreat and would try again to no avail. Its failure was the turning point in the fortune for the Third Reich. It also opened up the Eastern Front in the war. -
Pearl Harbor
More on Pearl HarborOn December 7th in 1941, the Japanese surprised attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The U.S. Naval base there had many of the ships used by the Navy at the time. Over 300 Japanese planes attacked with torpedo missiles attached to the bottom of the planes. Over 2,000 people died during the attack. The Japanese intended for the U.S. to stop giving supplies to allies. Instead the U.S. declared war and joined WWII eventually beating Japan with hydrogen bombs. -
Battle of Stalingrad
The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the largest and deadliest battles in World War II. It was a turning point in the war. After losing the battle, the German army lost so many soldiers and took such a defeat that they never quite recovered.

Bataan Death March
The Bataan Death March, was a 65 mile walk that Filipinos and Amercians who surrendered had to walk. They were put in groups of 100 and it is said it would take around 5 days to walk. After this American and Filipino troops fought to take back the Bataan peninsula. -
Operation Gomorrah
Opperation Gomorrah was when British aircraft dropped 2,300 tons of incendiary bombs on Hambrg in just a few hours. This was after German bombings killed many British civillians. -

Potsdam Conference
During the War, Britain and the USA were allies of the Soviet Union but the only thing that united them was their hatred of Germany. In 1945, the Big Three held two conferences at Yalta and Potsdam to try to sort out how they would organise the world after the war. It was at these conferences that the tensions between the two sides became obvious.
