    German Blitzkreig
    Germany quickly overran much of Europe and was victorious for more than two years by relying on a new military tactic called the "Blitzkrieg". Blitzkrieg tactics required the concentration of offensive weapons along a narrow front. This happened because Germany did not want to have a long war. Germany became involved in a long war, leading ultimately to its defeat in May 1945.

  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    Japan launched roughly 200 planes from six aircraft carriers in its first wave of Operation Hawaii. The United States fleeted at Pearl Harbor and suffered severe damage of 18 ships, including the battleships Arizona, Oklahoma, California, Nevada and West Virginia. The day after Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt asked Congress for a declaration of war, which was answered with support by a vote of 82-0 in the house.

  • Wannsee Conference

    Wannsee Conference
    15 high ranking Nazi party and German government leaders gathered for a important meeting. They met in Rheinhard section of Berlin at a villa by a lake know as Wannsee. The meeting was hel to discuss the "Final Solution to the Jewish in quiestion of Europe.

    On ths day, in World War II on which Allied forces invaded northern France by means of beach landings in Normandy. There was 176,000 troops that began to leave for England toward Normandy zones. D-Day was a massive military campaign to free Europe from Nazi control.

    Soviet soldiers were the first to liberate concentration camp prisoners in the final stages of the war. On July 23, 1944, they entered the Majdanek camp in Poland, Later theyy overran several other killing centers. On January 27, 1945, they entered Auschwitz and found hundreds of sick and exhausted prisoners.

    One-third of all Marine losses during World War II happened at Iwo Jima. It was the only large engagement of the war in where allied forces suffered more casualties than their Japanese counterparts. The battle lasted 36 days.

    he Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout.
