    Operation Gomorrah

    This operation was launched by British bombers. It was issued as retaliation against an attack done on Britain by the German bombing raids in early July. British aircrafts dropped 2,300 tons of incendiary bombs on Hamburg. There were several different bombing attacks that lasted until November. The people were devasted. Losing thousands of citizens, family members, friends, and children. This killed German morale. Even these events had a significant effect on the "great" Hitler.

    (Blitzkrieg is a term used to describe a method of offensive warfare designed to strike a swift, focused blow at an enemy using mobile, maneuverable forces, including armored tanks and air support.) The Germans used this type of attack in the early years of WWII, The Spanish Civil War, and the invasion of Poland. This type of warfare was calculated to create the most devastating effect possible.
  • The Attack on Pearl Harbor

    The Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor was a U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, as well as the scene of a devastating surprise attack by Japanese forces. Early in the morning, around 8 am Japanese fighter planes attacked the base, and in doing so they managed to destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. The casualties were astronomical. Because of this attack, Franklin D. Roosevelt requested that Congress declares war on Japan.

They all decided that the best course of action was to they would work the Jews to death and use "gas vans" also known as gas chambers to kill of mass numbers of Jews a day.

    Bataan Death March

    The day after the Attack on Pearl Harbor the Japanese invasion of the Philipines commenced. The U.S surrendered the Bataan peninsula to Japanese troops. The Filipino and American troops who were on this island (approximately 75,000) were forced to make a 65-mile trek in intense heat to the prison camps. They were subjected to harsh treatment by Japanese guards. Because of the harsh conditions, thousands perished along the way. Their comrades were forced to carry their dead bodies as they fell.

    Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

    After the invasion of Poland over 400,000 Jews were forced to live together on a one square mile block. This ghetto was sealed off by bricks, guards, and barbed wire. Anyone caught trying to escape was shot. Nazis controlled the amount of food brought inside so famine and disease killed thousands each month. When the Nazis came to collect Jews for concentration camps the Jews fought back and even though they all either got killed or captured they killed some Nazis and expressed their message.

    The Battle of Midway was an epic battle between the U.S. Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy that happened six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This battle was an air-sea fight. The U.S Navy won this battle. It was known as one of the important naval victories of WWII. The Battle of Midway turned the tide of the war. Japanese and American naval powers were roughly equalized.

    Also known as “the greatest American battle of the war” by Winston Churchill.This battle was the last major offensive battle against the Western Front for Adolf Hitler. His plan was to split the Allies on their way to Germany. However, the German troops’ failure to divide Britain, France, and America basically gave the win to the Allies. Although the Allies won it was not without sacrifice. The U.S. Army suffered over 100,000 casualties. Some froze to death because of German sabotage and ambush.

    On June 6, 1944, the Allied Forces of Britain, America, Canada, and France attacked German forces on the coast of Normandy, France. With a huge force of over 150,000 soldiers, the Allies attacked and gained a victory that became the turning point for World War II in Europe.

    Liberation of Concentration Camps

    As the Allies advanced across Europe at the end of the Second World War, they came across concentration camps filled with sick and starving Jewish prisoners. The first major camp to be liberated was Majdanek near Lublin, Poland in July 1944. Soviet soldiers found over six thousand emaciated prisoners alive when they entered the camp and freed them.

    The Battle of Iwo Jima was an epic military campaign between U.S. Marines and the Imperial Army of Japan. This battle warranted one of the highest percentages of casualties. It was the first major battle of World War II to take place in the Japanese homeland. The island of Iwo Jima was a strategic location because the US needed a place for fighter planes and bombers to land and take off when attacking Japan.

    Battle of Okinawa

    Lasting from April 1-June 22, this was the last major battle of WWII and it was one of the bloodiest. The American death toll was over 49,000 casualties including 12,520 killed. It was fought on Okinawa island. The fight was between the Americans, the Japanese, and Okinawa. After a lot of suicide, murder, and surrender Japan was close to losing. So to end the war Harry S. Truman dropped two atomic bombs one on Hiroshima and one on Nagasaki. Japan had had enough and surrendered. The war was over.

    VE DAY! A celebration across the United States & Great Britain. "Victory in Europe" Day was a celebration to celebrate the defeat of the Nazi war machine during WWII. They put out banners and flags to express their happiness.
  • Dropping of the Atomic Bombs

    These twin bombs were the bombs that ended WWII. They were both dropped on Japan. The first was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6. Japan was holding on and was hesitant to surrender. So a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9. That was what sealed the deal. Japan had finally given up and the war ended.

    VJ DAY! “Victory over Japan Day", was a joyful time. It was announced that Japan had surrendered. President Harry S.Truman said in a press conference at the White House after announcing Japan's surrender: “This is the day we have been waiting for since Pearl Harbor. This is the day when Fascism finally dies, as we always knew it would.”
