In my opinion, the Cold war started right after Hitler's death and the defeat of Germany. The Cold War was an arms build up between the US and USSR. The USSR would eventually collapse in 1991 and went back to being Russia. Luckily there was never really any war between the two as it surely would have led to the destruction of the planet.
