Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was the site of the United States Navy's main Pacific base. Under the command of Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, Japan sent 6 aircraft carriers, 360 airplanes, many battleships, submarines, and cruisers. This was a planned surprise attack on the U.S. About 2,500 people were killed on this day. * battleships were severley damaged, 3 destroyers were unusable, 3 light cruisers damaged, 160 aircraft destroyed, and 128 more damaged. -
America Declares War
The day after Pearl Harbor, FDR declares war on Japan during a unforgetable speech. "No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory." This is a quote from FDR's speech stating the no matter what the Americans will become victorious and overcome the damage that Japan put upon us. -
Assult on Guadalcanal
This ios the first American offensive in the pacific which took place on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. After three months of intense fighting, the Japanese were driven off the island. Guadalcanal was the first leg in a strategy to approach Japan from both the southwest Pacific and the central Pacific, using combined U.S. Marine, Navy, and Army forces. -
Decleration of the Three Powers
The Tehran Conference was a strategy meeting held between Joseph Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. It was held in the Soviet Embassy in Tehran, Iran and was the first conference between these leaders. "We have reached complete agreement as to the scope and timing of the operations to be undertaken from the east, west, and south."

D-Day
More than 11,000 planes prepare to destroy German communication and transportation networks and soften Nazi beach defenses. The first troops landed at 6:30 A.M.. On four of the beaches, the landings were easy and had low casualties. On the otherhand Omaha, one of the two beaches assigned to american forces, was a struggle. Within a month over 1 million troops had landed at Normandy. -

In a barren area outside of Alamogordo, New Mexico, the first atomic bomb was tested. The flash of light was visible from 180 mile away, and the sound was heard from over 100 miles away. It will be a bomb to immediately end the war and will be a complete surprise to japan. -

U.S. pilots dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. It exploded at 9:14 A.M. Within two minutes, more than 60,000 0f Hiroshima's 344,000 residents were dead or missing. Leaving a tough decision for Japan; to surrender or not. -
Bombing of Nagasaki and Soviet Union declares war on Japan
The U.S. dropped another attomic bomb on Nagasaki, killing 35,000 residents. Also, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. Debates continued at the highest levels of Japenese government. Japan had nothing left and many of their civillians had been killed and did not know weather the U.S. had any other atomic bombs. -
V-J Day
(Victory in Japan) Japan officially surrenders September 2 but the allies celebrate on August 15.They surrender aboard the USS Missouri. The most costly war in history was over. Over 60,000,000 people, mostly civillians, died durring WWII.
