    Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was the site of the United States Navy's main Pacific base. Under the command of Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, Japan sent 6 aircraft carriers, 360 airplanes, many battleships, submarines, and cruisers. This was a planned surprise attack on the U.S. About 2,500 people were killed on this day. * battleships were severley damaged, 3 destroyers were unusable, 3 light cruisers damaged, 160 aircraft destroyed, and 128 more damaged.

On four of the beaches, the landings were easy and had low casualties. On the otherhand Omaha, one of the two beaches assigned to american forces, was a struggle. Within a month over 1 million troops had landed at Normandy.

    The U.S. dropped another attomic bomb on Nagasaki, killing 35,000 residents. Also, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. Debates continued at the highest levels of Japenese government. Japan had nothing left and many of their civillians had been killed and did not know weather the U.S. had any other atomic bombs.
