    Rape of Nanking
    The genocide began on December 13, of 1937. The event took place in the former Republic of China, in the capital city of Nanking. People of Nanking were murdered and raped by the imperial Japanese troops. Groups of Japanese soldiers roamed the street in search of entertainment. Girls as young as 9 and women in their 70s were raped. Over course of 6 weeks about 200,000 people died.
  • Kristallnacht

    Kristallnacht
    Kristallnacht meaning "Crystal Night" in German was when German troops attacked Jewish people, businesses, and property. 7500 Jewish businesses were looted and 91 civilians were killed as well as nearly 30,000 Jewish males being imprisoned. To accommodate all these new prisoners concentration camps were opened and expanded. Only a few weeks later Jewish people were banned from most public places.

    The Manhattan Project was a US Government research project that created the first atomic bombs. Many scientists from around the world were brought in to work on the project including Albert Einstein. The project ultimately created the first atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan and was the motivating factor for Japanese surrender which meant the end of World War 2

    More than 900 Jews fled Germany aboard a luxury cruise , The SS St. Louis. They hoped to reach Cuba and then travel to US, but they were turned away in Havana and forced to return to Europe. More than 250 were killed by the Nazis because they returned.

    The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous battle of World War 2. It began when a German submarine shot a torpedo at the SS Athenia which was a passenger ship carrying 1400 civilians. They battled for control of key shipping routes between North America and Europe. Canada joined the battle and served primarily as escorts for the convoys that gathered in St. John and Halifax.

    German launched invasion on May 10 and launched an armored offensive through Ardennes forest which they did because they wanted full control of France which would benefit in the goal towards winning WW2 which forced French and British armys to retreat. It gave the Germans control over the war and was a huge loss for the allies.

    On the morning of December 7,1941 at 7:48 am the imperial Japanese Navy air service shocked the U.S and the world by attacking the U.S naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The attack at Pearl harbor was inevitable. Japan wanted to expand there economy in the Pacific. The Japanese attack damaged 20 American ships and more than 300 airplanes. About 2,500 men were killed, and another 100 men were wounded.

    The Battle of Hong Kong was a battle between Japan and Great Britain over the control of Hong Kong. Britain was undermanned and underpowered against the Japanese forces as many troops were sent away to help with battles elsewhere. Japan ultimately won the battle and captured 9500 British troops. Japan would hold Hong Kong until the end of the war.

The people of The Netherlands were suffering from extreme hunger and hardship which is why the allies chose to go there soon after D-Day. Canada played a massive role in freeing The Netherlands from Nazi Germany and this explains the great friendship these two nations share today.

    D Day was the day where 156,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy. Hitler believed the allies were using the beaches of Normandy as a distraction for a bigger attack at the Seine River so he didn't take the invasion seriously at first. The allies successfully took over the beaches and a week later nearly 326,000 troops had landed at Normandy. This battle led to the allies pushing the Axis forces out of France.

    On April 30th, 1945 Adolf Hitler took his own life in his Führerbunker in Berlin, Germany. As the allies got closer to taking over Berlin,Hitler decided taking own life was better than to be imprisoned and the shame that would come with being captured. The death of Hitler had major consequences, his death led to the collapse of the Nazi powers and ultimately the surrender of Germany to the allies.

    Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    United States dropped the first ever atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The Hiroshima explosion wiped out 90% of the city and immediately killing 80,000 people .After 3 days the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing over 40,000 people. Japan’s Emperor Hirohito surrendered just like United States intended. Tens of thousands of people would died of radiation exposure.
