  • Zenger Trial

    Arrested for libel and was defended by Alexander Hamilton who won the case. This set the precedent for free speech in America.
  • Albany Congress

    Delegates from 7 colonies got together to decide how to deal with problems with French and Indians. Also voted yes on Ben Franklin's albany plan that would have united colonies but ended up being stopped by colonies.

    War fought between French and English that started in North American. Also called the French and Indian War in America

    Pontiac's rebellion

    Also known as Pontiac's conspiracy. Led by Indian cheif Pontiac who fought English in Ohio Valley after they defeated French. Deleware prophet helped to rallie Indians because he said that they should return to traditional ways. Peace was made in 1766 when Pontiac recieved a pardon and stopped fighting.
  • Sugar Act

    Tax on goods in American made by Parliment which is the first tax strictly enforced by the English
  • Stamp Act

    Made it so all pieces of paper had to have stamp on it that was bought from the English government
  • Declaratory Act

    Law passed by parliment saying that Parliment is in charge of colonies. Made when they repealed stamp act to save face.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act

    British repealed Stamp act because the boycotts were hurting the English trade and economy.
  • Boston Massacre

    British soldiers killed 5 colonists in streets of Boston for harrassing them.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Destruction of heavily taxed tea in Boston harbor by Sons of Liberty who were dressed as Indians.

    Five acts passed by Parliment meant to make an example of the colonies that wwere seen as bad and were resented by colonist
  • First Continental Congress

    Delegates from twleve of the colonies met in Philidelphia to discuss what to do in response to the Interrable Acts
  • Lexington and Concord

    First Battle of revolution where Americans shot at the British while hiding in the trees.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Managed war effort and wrote the Declaration of Independance
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    British attacked Colonists outside of Boston and took hill but the colonists killed many of the British and had minimal losses
  • Olive Branch Petition

    attempt by some members of Second Continental Congress to reconcile with the king and end the war
  • Battle of Fort Ticonderoga

    Americans suprised the British and conquered the fort which let them controll movement along Hudson River
  • Virginia Declaration of Rights

    States rights of man including the right to rebel against bad government
  • Common Sense

    Written by Thomas Paine. Stated why the Americans had the right to break away from England. Made the people want to rebel.
  • Decleration of Independance.

    Written by Thomas Jefferson and stated the reasons why we were rebelling and was sent to England.
  • Battle of Long Island

    First major battle after DoI where British drove Washington out of New York with a superior force
  • Bill for Religous Freedom

    Drafted by Thomas Jefferson asking for religous freedom which was eventually adopted by the whole country
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Defeat of British army in New England that was instrumental in bringing the French into the war

    Valley Forge

    Camp in Pennsylvania where the troops stayed for the winter. Won a big battle just by surviving to continue the fight.
  • Articles of the Confederation

    Ratified by all the states and created a federation. Our first constituion.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Where Washington finally defeated the British. Surrounded them on land and had French cut off reinforcements with their fleet.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Ended revolutionary war between United States and England which made the United States a free country.
  • Land Ordinance of 1785

    Government surveyed and then sold land to promote moving west and raise money
  • Washington's Inauguration

    Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States.
