British and French prime ministers Neville Chamberlain and Edouard Daladier sign the Munich Pact with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. This agreement avoided war but gave Czechoslovakia away to Germany.Hitler wanted Germany to own sudentenland and by the end of the month have Czechoslovaka evacuate.Chamberlain and French Prime Minister Daladier, unprepared for the outbreak of hostilities traveled to Munich, where they gave in to Hitler's demands on September 30. -
Non-Aggression Pact
Before World War 2 broke out in Europe Germany and Soviet Union surprised the world by signing a Non-Agression Pact.The two nations to take no military action against each other for the next 10 years. Stallin viewed the pact as a way to be at peaceful terms with germany but Hitler viewed the pact as a way to invade poland being unopposed.The pact contained a secret aggreement to divide up eastern Europe later. -
Germany Invades Poland
At 4:45 German troops invaded Poland on German controlled territory.German luftwaffe bombed airfields and their U boats attacked naval forces in the baltic sea. Hitler said it was a denfense attack but britain and france did not believe him and declared war on germany which initiated world war 2. -
Blitzkrieg
This is a german term for lightening war and a military tactic designed to create disorganization among enemys.German forces tried out the blitzkrieg in Poland in 1939 before successfully employing the tactic with invasions of Belgium, the Netherlands and France in 1940.This term was never found in german military handbooks or manuels or generals but said to have a foreign origin. -
Battle Of Britain
In the summer of 1940 the German and Britain air forces faught over the united kingdom.The battle ended when german luftwaffe failed after months of targeting britains air bases,military post and civilian population.This proved tht air power alone could be used to win a major victory in a war. -
Lend-Lease Act
This act allowed the United States to provide aid to foreign nations during World War 2. This act allowed the United States to support war intrest without being overextended in battle.The transfer of supplies were sent to China,Britain,Soviet Union and other countrys. -
Operation Barbarossa
Over 3 million german troops invaded russia in 3 parallel offensives. This plan was to invade and occupy russia yet only a month before Hitler asked to be allies with.The Russian army was larger then the Germans but they still destroyed more then 1,000 Soviet aircrafts. -
Pearl harbor
On December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii.The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and almost 200 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. -
Wannsee Conference
This was a meeting between Heydrich,Adolf Eichmann who was chief of the Central Office of Jewish Emigration, and 15 other officials from various Nazi ministries and organizations at Wannsee to discuss how to exterminate the jews.Months later they found that the gas vans proved to be the solution to killing them. They wanted to kill them all and have no survivors but they did not want to do something that was time consuming. -
Bataan Death March
The US surrendered the Bataan Peninsula to the Japanese and the Filipino and American troops were forced to march 65 miles to prison camps. As they marched they had harsh treatment from the japanese guards and intense heat.For 3 months we had a lack of air and naval support also diseases and starvation therefore we surrendered. -
Battle Of Midway
This attack happened six months after they attack on pearl harbor, the US defeated japan in what is known as The Battle Of Midway but also know as most to the point naval battle in World War 2. Also with a major advance in code breaking the US was able to ambush the Japanese inflicting permanent damage to their navy.This allowed the US and its allies to move into a offneisve position. -
Battle Of Stalingrad
The Soviet Union surrounded and crushed the entire german army.This was marked the bloodiest battle in history with nearly 2 million casualtys between military and cvilian.Also marked a favor in the war on allies side. -
D Day
The battle of Normandy lasted from june to august which resulted in the allied taking over Western Europe from germany. D Day was when the American, British and canadian forces invaded France normandy. This is one of the largest military attacks in history that required a lot of planning. This war is said to be the end of war in Europe. -
Battle Of The Bulge
Hitler attempted to split up the allied armies and use blitzskrieg in Adrennes to Antwerp.They caught the Americans off guard and the allied line took on the appearnace of a large bulge giving the name Battle of the Bulge.Therefore as a result this lead to the neutraliztation of the german counteroffense even though they had heavy casualtys. -
The Holocaust
The word Holocaust is used to describe a sacrafical offering burned on an alter. Now it means the murder of 6 million jews in ww2 by the Nazis.Jews were seen as an alien race or threat to germans.Jews as well as homosexuals and gypsies were put in concentration camps and murdered. -
Battle Of Iowa Jima
The Island of Iowa Jimma was roughly defneded by 23,00 navy and army japanese troops who faught from caves,dugouts,tunnels and underground installations. America wiped them out within a month and the US flag was raised in victory.However because of this invasion in world war 2 this led to the need for a air base near the coast of the japanese. -
Battle Of Okinawa
This battle was last and largest battle of the pacific islands with 287,000 US troops and 130,000 japanese troops.The US invaded Okinawa because it would give them a large enough base for they invasions of the Japanese home islands.The US dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August, Japan surrendered. -
V-E Day
Germans surrendered to the Soviet Union after losing about 8 thousand men.Britain and the United States celebrate this day as well as occupied cities in Europe who put out flags and banners for the defeat of the nazi war machine.It has been told that this ended world war 2. -
The Bombing Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki
The US wanted Japan to surrender and when they did not surrender we dropped the first atomic bomb on hiroshima, it killed 80,000 people.We asked them to surrender again but the refused making the US drop the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki which killed 40,000 people.The bombs were called "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" because of their shape and size. -
V-J Day
On this day it was announced that Japan had surrendered to the allies unconditionally.August 15th and 14th have been known as victory over Japan day or simply V-J Day.The term has also been used for September 2, 1945, when Japan’s formal surrender took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. -
Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact got its name because it was signed in Warsaw between Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria.This pact put soviet commanders incharge of these states armed forces.
