Pearl Harbor
Japanese navy fighter planes bombed US Pacific fleet stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Japan wanted to take out Pacific fleet because we froze their assets. US joined the war by declaring war on Japan. -
Bataan Death March
72,000 American and Filipino POWs were forced by the Japanese to march 22 miles to the POW camp. Only 54,000 prisoners survived. The propoganda to the US people inspierd them to help the war cause. -
Operation Overlord
General Eiesenhower coordinated an invasion of Normandy, France by the Allied forces. The goal was to push the Germans out of France and to eventually get to Hitler. This was the beginning of the end of the war. -
Battle of the Bulge
German troops launched desperate and dealdly attack in the Belgian forest. It was the last push to try and push the Allies out but it failed. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
US took over Japanese controlled Iwo Jima island, a strateigic air and navy base because it lay between the US and Japan. Many men were lost over one little island, so it influenced the descision to drop the atomic bomb. -
Yalta Confrence
US President FDR and Winston Churchill of Britain disscussed the issue of the war in the Pacific with the Saltin of the Soviet Union. Russia agreed to help and became part of the Allies. -
V-E Day
German Gerneral Jodi igned a surrender paper. After Hitler had killed himself, the Germans knew their cause was futile. The contract ended the war in Europe. -
Dropping the Atomic Bomb
US dropped an atomic bomb from the Enola Gay on Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We wanted to take out major cities to end the war in the Pacific. 120,000 people died. -
V-J Day
Japan formally surrenders to the Allies on the USS Missouri. They were crippled by the attacks by the atomic bomb. This ended the war in Japan.
