    German warships invaded Norway in April of 1940. Hitler had tanks across the border of Norway. Germany also invaded Denmark. They surrenderred immediately. Picture

    Air raids began on Paris on June 3, 1940. On June 11, the government left. At Compeigne, the French signed and armistice. They signed it in the same railway car that Germany signed its armistice to end WWI.

    The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest battle of WWII. It lasted from 1939 till the end of the war. In June of 1940, Italy joined the battle.
  • National Defense Research Committee

    Roosevelt created the National Defence Research Committee. It was used to study nuclear weapons. These type of weapons would be used later in the war. Bush was the head of the committee.

    The Battle of Britian took place in July of 1940. It was an air campaign led by Germany against the United KIngdom. It was the first battle that entirely used air forces. Many historical sites in London were destroyed. Picture

    Moscow was the Soviet captial. Hitler and the Germans tried to attack, but were not prepared for the winter weather. The Germans could not afford to loose so the backed up.

    In Septenber of 1941, the first gassing of prisoners took place in Auschwitz. Auschwitz was on of the six death camps in Poland. Millions of Jews were killed. Gas chambers was one of many ways they killed them. Picture

    Pearl Harbor was an American naval base in Hawaii. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 killing many Americans. Japan declared war US and Great Britian. The US would now have an opportunity to move against Hitler aiding Britian. Picture

    The Wannsee Conference was when many Nazi officers and top SS ofificers met outside of Berlin. They developed the "Final Solution". It was a plan to completly destroy the Jews of Europe. It resulted in the Holocaust.

    Japan was beginning to gain control over Easten Asia. General Douglass MacAurthur pulled his troops back to the Bataan Peninsula. At the Bataan Death March, many US troops experianced harsh conditions. MacAuthur escaped saying "I shall return".

    The Battle of Midway ended Japense threat towards the Eastern Pacific. The US defeated the Japense at this battle. American code breakers determined the locations of the attacks that the Japense were planning. The US waited and ambushed them. Picture

    The Battle of Stalingrad began in August of 1942. It was a door to door fight in Russia. Germany was defeated at this battle. Thousands of Russian citizens died trying to keep the Germans out. The war began to fall in favor of the Allies. Picture

    The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was an act that permited the Nazis from taking the rest of the ghetto population to concentration camps. They were crushed by the Germans because they were poorly suplied. This was the largest revolt the Jews had against the Germans in WWII.

  • Allies Agree To Use Bomb

    On September 19, 1944, the Allies agreed to using a bomb on Japan. Churchill and Roosevelt secretly agreed. They kept this news from the Soviet Union.

    The Battle of Okinawa lasted 82 days. The Allies were trying to use the islands of Okinawa as a base for their air forces. Japan lost over 100,000 soldiers at this battle.

    In July of 1945 they tested the atomic bomb, The test was sucessful so they felt ready and confident. They tested the bomb near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
  • Surrender of Japan

    Surrender of Japan
    The US dropped a bomb on Japan causing them to surrender. It killed over 140,000 people. Truman was the president at the time and approved the bomb. Truman became president when Roosevelt died. Picture
