    Hitler Becomes Chancellor
    On this day, President Paul von Hindenburg names Adolf Hitler as chancellor of Germany. Shortly after this, Paul von Hindenburg died and Hitler was named president. Everyone relied on Hitler to fix the economic problems of Germany. They also relied on him to help recover Germany after the war.

    Neutrality Act
    President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the 1937 Neutrality Act. The act bans travel on belligerent ships, forbids the arming of American merchant ships trading with belligerents, and issues an arms embargo with warring nations. Although the legislation stated that the U.S. intended to stay out of foreign wars, Roosevelt insisted that the country could not have future situations in which the U.S. might have to be in neutral stance.

    On this day, Japanese warplanes dive-bombed the American gunboat Panay in the Yangtze River in China.During the battle of Sino-Japanese War, the american boat Panay was attacked by Japanese warplanes in Chinese waters. The American boat was nuetral in this territory. It was only merely transporting resources when it was attacked. This started the first real tension between Japan and the United States.

    On this day, German troops invaded Poland on the ground while Hitler's air force bombed Polish cities from the sky.About 1.5 million German troops invaded Poland all along its border. German aircrafts bombed Polish airfields, and German warships and boats attacked Polish naval forces in the Baltic Sea. German completely wiped out Poland on this day.

    Japan Joins Axis Powers
    Japan joined the Axis powers on this day. Italy, Germany, and Japan would continue to fight the war all on the same side. Japan joined this side for many reasons. Germany signed a treaty with Japan to offer protection against the growing and industrializing Russia that appeared in the thirties. It also gave Japan increased access to the German economy.

    On this day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt meets with the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill. The two leaders write up the Atlantic Charter.The Atlantic Charter was basically a blueprint for the world after WWII, and is the foundation for many of the international treaties and organizations that currently shape the world. Such as the United Nations.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    On this day, 3 million Allied soldiers arrive in Normandy, on the northern shores of France. Allied powers crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy. This began the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control during World War II. After this, the northern part of France would be freed and the force would be preparing to enter Germany.

    This is the day Hitler commited suicide. He had his wife and both of his dogs commit suidide as well. This happened somewhere in a bunker in Berlin. The way he killed himself was with a cyanide capsule. He actually took it, then shot himself after.

    The United States drops an atomic bomb—the first to be used—on Hiroshima. This atomic bomb killied 75,000 people instantly, and injured more than 100,000. The japanese would still not surrender after this. Thus leading the Soviet Union to invade the Pacific and finally defeat the Japanese.

    On this day, WW2 finally ended. Many things happened when WW2 ended. The world emerged from the deep depression it had been in prior to the war. Additionally, Germany was split into two haves, the Democratic side and the Russian side. The United Nations emerged after the war. Many Jews also left Germany for Israel and America.
