A group called "Black Hand" was the organization that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This happened in Sarajevo, the capital of Austria-Hungary at the time. -
The Christmas Truce was a peace between the British and the Germans. They met in "no man's land", which was in the middle of their own trenches. It was a time when everyone greeted each other, sang carols, and even played soccer. Right after December 26th, the military high command called their troops back to resume the war.

The Lusitania was a British ocean liner that came from New York and was going to Liverpool. It was sunk by a German submarine, which killed about 1,200 of the 2,000 on board. Most of the people were from Britain, but about 160 of them were American. This made Woodrow Wilson and the American public furious. -
The Bolsheviks overthrew the Russian government because they were dissatisfied with the government's management of the war. They began to seize certain areas that the Russian government had control of. This caused the government to lose power, which then gave the Bolsheviks power. After they obtained control, the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party left the war.

In Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, New York, William James Bean started his camp life after he got drafted. He began to commence his camp routine, which included going to bed at 9:15 and waking up at 6:30. He also had enough beans to live a whole lifetime. -
William and the other people are not allowed to leave the building because they are still in quarantine. This means they have to run to the food. It's about half a mile to the food place and back. William eats a couple of times a day, so he runs 4 miles a day to eat food. -
In Fort Hamilton, William and others will have to go to France. Their group is very unsettled because they don't want to go. Once they started to venture off toward France, nothing happened. William did not get seasick, nor did he have troubles inside the boat. He described the people who lived there, "Strange-looking people". They wore wooden shoes, and men wore black aprons. William talks about how the buildings were made with stone and concrete, a kind of life from ancient times.

William writes to his mother about how the war just ended and he can't wait till he gets home. He's very excited to have food that he likes, instead of beans. He also sends cards home to his friends: Johnie, Delaney, and Farly. -
William Bean is moving away from the Bay of Biscay. He is ready to go home because staying in France for 9 months is not fun. He also only ate canned Willie for 9 months. He says it rains about 25 times every 24 hours. He and his other crewmates watch movies until the time, but William says it's too hot in that room. He will arrive home around January 24th. -
This event officially ended the war between the Allies and Germany. The treaty made Germany lose a lot of territory and they had a limited military. The treaty also created the League of Nations which promoted peaces to all areas of the world. Many people think that this treaty against Germany was the cause of World War 2.
