The Nazi-Soviet Non-Agression Pact
On August 23, 1939, representatives from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union met and signed the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, which guaranteed that the two countries would not attack each other. -
Germany attacks Poland
German forces attack Poland with a new tactic called Blitzkrieg. The polish air force was destroyed. Great Britain and France agreed to help poland if attacked. -
France and Britain declare war on Germany
Great Britain and France became known as the Allies after the attack on Poland. -
The attack on France
On May 10th, the attack on France began. Germany takes control of the Netherlands and Belgium, countries that lay between France and Germany. the Allies rush to attack Germany but ar no match for german troops. -
France surrenders to Germany
The remaining allied troops in france were unable to stop the Germans march toward Paris. Germany placed French officials under control of france who cooperated. French leaders escaped to Britain, there they formed a resistance to German contorl of France -
Battle of Britain
Between August and October of 1940 germany sent thousands of aircrafts to attack the English Channel. Hitlers plan was to destroy the British Royal Air Force and make it easier to attack Britain. The British were helped by their new technology called radar and were able to defeat the Germans. -
The Invasion of the Soviet Union
in June 1941, broke his none agression act with stalin and sent some 3 million German troops. The Germans blitzkrieg was higley affective at first as it was in poland and france. The Soviets had millions of soldiers but poorley trainded. German was unsuccesfull due to the Soviet winter conditions. -
Japan Attacks
On December 7th of 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack lasted less then 2 hours but the destruction was massive. Some 2,400 Americans had died, nearley 200 aircraft had been destroyed, and all 8 battleships in the harbor were sunk or dammaged. -
U.S. Declares War
on December 8 1941, the United States Congress declared war on Japan. Three days later Germany and Italy and Japan declare war on the United States. The United States joined the Allies in the global fight against the Axis. -
Battle of Midway
Japanese leaderes wanted to capture the island of miday home to american military base. the Japanese attempted to set a trap on midway but the Americans knew when and were there would be an attempt to attack. in the battle that followed the americans destroyed 4 japanese carriers with a lost of 1 of there own. -
The Battle of Stalingrad
Hitler ordered renewed assaults on the Soviet Unionin Stalingrad. Stalingrad was one of the largest cities in the Soviet Union. A strong defenses quickley surrounding some 250,000 men. -
D-Day
Allied troops invaded France by July nearley 1 million soldiers had come to France. After some battleing in the first few weeks the allied forces broke into the German defenses. By the end of August the germans had surrendered Paris. -
Battle of Leyte Gulf
The Battke of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle ever faought. The Japanese used a new major weapon, the kamikazes. Kamikazes attacks sunk dozens of allied ships but did not change the outcome. The Allies won the battle and it would dtll take months of fighting to reach the Phillipines. -
Germany Surrenders
On May 2 the Soviets had found the body of Adolf Hitler near his Berlin Bunker, he had taken his own life. On that same day the war was over. -
V-E Day
GHermany surrenedered in may 7th. the next day was named V-E day-- Victory in Europe day. After nearley six Years of war the war in Europe was over. -
Atomic Bomb
Harry S Truman the president of the United States had to make a decision on dropin the atomic bomb on Japan or not. The Allies issued a demand for Japan's surrender the japnaes did not respond. On August, an American plane dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan. More than 70,000 people were killed instantly. A quick surrender came from Japan after a second atomic bomb was dropped in the city of Nagasaki. -
V-J Day
Japanese emperor Hirohito surredered on August 15, 1945. The War was finally over.
