    On August 23, 1939, representatives from Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union met and signed the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, which guaranteed that the two countries would not attack each other.

    On December 7th of 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack lasted less then 2 hours but the destruction was massive. Some 2,400 Americans had died, nearley 200 aircraft had been destroyed, and all 8 battleships in the harbor were sunk or dammaged.

    on December 8 1941, the United States Congress declared war on Japan. Three days later Germany and Italy and Japan declare war on the United States. The United States joined the Allies in the global fight against the Axis.

    Hitler ordered renewed assaults on the Soviet Unionin Stalingrad. Stalingrad was one of the largest cities in the Soviet Union. A strong defenses quickley surrounding some 250,000 men.

    Allied troops invaded France by July nearley 1 million soldiers had come to France. After some battleing in the first few weeks the allied forces broke into the German defenses. By the end of August the germans had surrendered Paris.

    The Battke of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle ever faought. The Japanese used a new major weapon, the kamikazes. Kamikazes attacks sunk dozens of allied ships but did not change the outcome. The Allies won the battle and it would dtll take months of fighting to reach the Phillipines.

    On May 2 the Soviets had found the body of Adolf Hitler near his Berlin Bunker, he had taken his own life. On that same day the war was over.

    GHermany surrenedered in may 7th. the next day was named V-E day-- Victory in Europe day. After nearley six Years of war the war in Europe was over.

    Harry S Truman the president of the United States had to make a decision on dropin the atomic bomb on Japan or not. The Allies issued a demand for Japan's surrender the japnaes did not respond. On August, an American plane dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan. More than 70,000 people were killed instantly. A quick surrender came from Japan after a second atomic bomb was dropped in the city of Nagasaki.
