William Golding is born in Cornwall, England.

William at the age of 12 tries to write his first novel but it was unsuccessful. He is frustrated by this and other things in life and starts to bully other kids. Later in life he would say "I enjoyed hurting people".

Golding begins to attend Brasenose College at Oxford. He would study science for 2 years until switching to literature in his 3rd year.

After William graduates from college, he starts working in settlement houses and a theatre. He would eventually become a teacher of English and Philosophy. He was very passionate about teaching from day one.

With World War 2 breaking out, William leaves his teaching job to fight in the Royal Navy. He would spend the next 6 years on a boat where he would eventually fall in love with sailing and the sea.
