William was born September 19th, 1911, in Newquay, Cornwall England. His parents are Mildred and Alec Golding.

At the early age of 12, he attended Marlborough Royal Free Grammar School, where his dad taught.

Educated at Brasenose college at Oxford University, in 1930. Planning to Follow the study of English litature.

he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. In 1935 Golding took a position teaching English and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth’s School in Salisbury.

William married Ann Brookfield, an analytical chemist, on 30 September 1939. They went on to have two kids, David (born September 1940) and Judith (born July 1945).

In 1940 William Golding temporarily abandoned his profession to join the Royal Navy and fight in World War II for 5 years

William published Lord of the Files in September 17, 1954. This was his first book after 21 other rejections. He was 43 years old at that time.
