William Golding was the son of Alec Golding and Mildred Golding. When he was young he went to Marlborough Royal Free Grammar School where he showed a large interest in writing.

William Golding attended Oxford where he graduated with a second-class degree. From 1935 to 1937 Goldferd spent teaching at a Steiner school in Streatham, South London, but would return to Oxford in 1937 where he would get a diploma in education.
