A theory that said if one country fell to communism it would cause countries around it to become communist spreading communism all around the world. -
America Aids France
America supported France in the war, which means that they were supporting the country that had colonies. They did this because they feared the communist ideals of the Vietnamese. -
The Geneva Accords
Agree to a ceasefire in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, ending the first Indochina War. This led to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam gaining their freedom. -
Diem's Assassination
Diem, who supported capitalism in South Vietnam was assassinated. He supported capitalism, but had other issues including persecuting non-catholic Vietnamese which alienated his supporters. -
The Gulf of Tonkin Incident
While US battleships were patrolling in the Gulf of Tonkin they were fired up on by North Vietnamese ships which led to US retaliation. -
Use of Agent Orange
Started being used by the Department of defense in 1965 and used until 1971. Agent Orange was a herbicide that has a highly toxic chemical called dioxin. -
The Tet Offensive
North Vietnamese troops and Viet Cong led a large coordinated offensive against different targets in South Vietnam. -
My Lai Massacre
US troops entered My Lai massacre very agitated and that led to them massacring 300 Vietnamese people including women, children, and elderly. This led to even more people turning against the war. -
US Troops Withdrawals and Vietnamization
Happened between 1969-1973 where President Nixon tried to remove troops from Vietnam and let the Vietnamese settle the issues in their country. -
War Powers Act
Was intended to check the presidents power after the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. It forces the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of military action and restricts the amount of time troops can be in an area. -
The Fall of Saigon
The Fall of Saigon was the final battle in the Vietnam war which led to the fall of South Vietnam. This led to the reunification of Vietnam by the communist North Vietnam.
