    The Geneva Accords were multiple agreements made throughout 1954. The Geneva Accords created the DMZ and forced a withdrawal of French forces. The Geneva Accords marked the end of French Colonialism.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    Operation Rolling Thunder

    A sustained aerial bombardment campaign by the united states against North Vietnam. It was the first major U.S. air offensive targeting North Vietnamese territory. It happened to pressure North Vietnam to stop supporting the Viet Cong insurgency in the South.
  • Battle of Khe Sanh

    Battle of Khe Sanh

    The battle was one of the longest and bloodiest of the wars. U.S. Marines and South Vietnamese forces defended the base and surrounding hills. It happened because North Vietnam used it as a diversion to draw U.S. forces away from cities.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive began on January 30, 1968 during the vietnamese Lunar New Year. It was a surprise attack by North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. The U.S. and South Vietnamese militaries sustained heavy losses before finally repelling the communist assault.
  • My lai massacre

    The My Lai massacre was the mass killing of South Vietnamese citizens by U.S. troops. The soldiers were expecting to find the Viet Kong but instead found women, elders, and kids. Lieutenant William Calley commanded that troops kill the civilians. The U.S. tried to cover up that the massacre happened and it helped anti-war efforts.

    Vietnamization was a war strategy implemented by Nixon. The purpose of Vietnamization was to withdraw U.S. troops from Vietnam and get South Vietnam troops to fight instead. The U.S. withdrawal was successful, but the plan eventually failed because the South Vietnam military struggled with combat.
  • The battle of Hamburger Hill

    The battle of Hamburger Hill

    The battle of Hamburger Hill lasted for a total of 10 days. The battle killed 72 U.S. forces and 340 Vietnamese soldiers. The U.S. forces overtook the summit but eventually abandoned it.
  • The Cambodian Incursion

    The Cambodian Incursion were multiple military operations in eastern Cambodia by the U.S. and South Vietnam. The purpose of The Cambodian incursion was to destroy VC supply lines and sanctuaries. U.S. forces collected huge amounts of any material and successfully disrupted supply lines.
  • The Easter Offensive

    The Easter Offensive was a massive invasion of South Vietnam by North Vietnam forces. North Vietnam wanted to test the effectiveness of Vietnamization. The attack happened at 3 places at once, but South Vietnam still ended up winning. There were 100,00 casualties in North Vietnam troops and 30,000 casualties in South Vietnam troops.

  • Paris Peace Accords

    The Paris Peace Accord was a treaty meant to end the Vietnam war. The U.S. agreed to withdraw all their troops, and both countries agreed to release all prisoners of war. The treaty eventually failed.
  • Fall of Saigon

    North Vietnam forces captured Saigon, which is the capital of South Vietnam. Right before the fall, U.S. forces started Operation Frequent Wind (a helicopter evacuation). The operation rescued Americans and South VIetnamese citizens who were scared of communism.
