An agreement between multiple counties that ended the first Indo China War, it impacts Vietnam because it split Vietnam. A country that shared culture, language and even religion. Buddhist Crisis
The Buddhist Crisis was a time period where religion became restricted within South Vietnam. Buddhism was prohibited and not allowed to be practiced. This created concern for the US government that was trying to prevent South Vietnam from falling to communism, because freedom of religion is the antithesis of communism. Gulf Of Tonkin
An incident involving the USS Maddox where they were attacked by Vietnam Airships off of the Gulf Of Tonkin. This Lead to the Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution which gave Lyndon B. Johnson power to defend against future attacks by any means necessary. This was a pivotal step in the US's involvement and an almost scary overstep of presidential bounds. Tet Offensive
Tet is considered one of the most special holidays in Vietnam culture, a time to celebrate family and peace. Northern Vietnam initiated the largest military attack on the South on this holiday. Furthermore, there was massive causalities on both sides. It showed to America how severely we were actually losing the way against North Vietnam, dramatically changing many American's opinions. -
My Lai Massacre
The My Lai Massacre was a major turning point for the war. US forces killed over 500 innocent and unarmed Vietnam citizens.
