    Phillippeville & Pompeii
Fifteen crews left the 310th Bombardment group at Phillippeville, Algeria by C-37s. Landed at Pompeii and stayed with the 340th. Group for four days and were then transferred to 321st--445th Squadron. Previous to this move I had already flown 13 missions from Cape Bon, Tunisia and spent a month in the hospital at Bone with the Yellow Jaundice. At last it looked as if we were going to get back into the war. When we moved in with the 445th Squadron I was lucky enough to get in a tent with my old f

    First Mission in 3 months
Flew my first mission since Oct. 3rd. Mission No. 14. Flew as Co-Pilot for Flight Officer Vallery. We led the second box of nine ships. Our target was a bridge about 50-60 miles north of the bomb line. For some reason the leader of the Group got mixed up on his course and led us right into some of the most intense and accurate flak I have seem up to this time. We did not lose any ships but everyone got plenty of holes. We only got about six small holes without doing any damage. No bombs were dro

    Encountering Flak
Flew mission No. 15 as co-pilot for Lt. Neumann, our Sqdn. Operations Officer. A very good pilot and a swell fellow. They seem to be training me for a flight leader. A job which I am a little reluctant to take because of the tremendous responsibility of leading a flight to the target, getting them formed into proper formation, finding the target and then also do a good job of bombing. Can't help but feel that if anyone gets hurt or shot down that if you had done a little differently it wouldn't
  • News from Anzio

Word was received yesterday that the Invasion was a complete surprise we got up early this morning and got our briefing for today's run. Found the target o.k. but a partial cloud cover kept us from bombing it. Made a second run which turned out to be too short and as a result didn't drop bombs. We came back by Avizona to further cut off suppllies for Hun troops. Flew co-Pilot for Neumann in No 1 ship.

Started on mission but had to turn back. Bombsight malfunction.
  • Heavy Flak

    Heavy Flak
new Co-Pilot for Vallery. No 1. ship in Group. Hit marshaling yards at Orte. Really plastered that place. Luckily and happily we encountered no flak. Saw a few fighters but think that they were friendly. This morning mission was really rough from all accounts. I did not go on it. One ship got a direct hit and blew two men out the ship and they hit the ship flying directly behind them. Of course blood was all over the props and ship when it got back here. Those A.A. boys the Germans have are real
