    Van Gogh was born in Zundert, the Netherlands.His fathervwss a pastor.He had a sister and a brother.

  • His first work

    At the age of 16 he started working for an art dealer. His brother Theo joined him later.

    Van Gogh takes up painting in earnest and he takes lessons from Anton Mauve in Hauge.He got influenced by his teacher , although he developed his own artistic style .

    He moves to Paris, Montmartre with his brother. There he discovers impressionism and especially the technique of pointillism.

    Near the end of 1888 Gauguin decides to leave Arles after a number of arguments with Van Gogh .The incident ended up with Van Gogh cutting a portion of his ear lobe off.

    Van Gogh leaves the asylum and moves to Auvers-sur-Oise where he creates the portrait of his doctor,"Dr.Gachet". This portrait was sold for the record price of $82.5 million at Christie's.

    At the age of 37 after a fit of activity Van Gogh shot himself in the chest. He was buried at the cemetery of Auvers-sur-Oise. Theo, his brother, unable to accept his death, died 6 months later. He was buried next to him.
