    Columbus expedition

    Christopher columbus expedition reached The Americas in 1492. This marked the beginning of the European colonization. However, it was not until 1607 that the first permanent settlement was established in jamestown Virginia.
  • Slavery and its abolition

    Slavery and its abolition

    Plantation owners saw the need for cheap labor, and the first legal slave owner was recognized in 1654. Slaves were part of the Triangular trade that took manufactured goods from England to Africa were they were exchanged for slaves. The slaves were then taken to America and sold. Raw materials from the plantations, such as tobacco, sugar and cotton. Between 1700 and 1800 an estimated 250,000 slaves were taken to America and owning slaves was largely accepted.

    Decleration of independence

    As more people settled in North America and began to develop farms and industry, they began to question whether it was a good idea to be part of Britain, and decided to declare their independence. In 1776 the colonies signed the declaration of independence. The transition to an independent country was not a peaceful one, however. It took eigth years of conflict from 1775 to 1783 before britain gave the new nation complete independence.
  • Lewis and clark expedition

    Lewis and clark expedition

    This was an expedition led by two men, Lewis and Clark, to fins a route into new territory in the west, and also to map the area they traveled through. They had help from a Native called Sacagewa.
  • A divided Nation

    Freed slaves were intended to have the same rigths as other free med, but in practice this was not the case. Although some african americans were elected into office in the 1880s, the southern states made it difficult for African Americans to vote.
