The US wanted Independence from the British crown, and wrote the Declaration of Independence, signed by the Founnding Fathers. Among them, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

Plantation owners saw the need for cheap labor, and the first legal slave owner was recognized in 1654, and they were part of the traingle trade. Slaveru was official abolished in 1865 at this time as the country moved towards the abolition of slavery and slaves were expericencing their first years of freedom, the Indian reservations.

After the Second World war, although it was almost 100 years since slavery was abolished, segregation and discimination were still common. Howerver, things were beginning to happen. In 1954, the Supreme Court decided that the idea of "seperate but equal" was unconstitutional, and segregation of public schools was no longer allowed.

From 2009-2017, the US had its first African-American president, Barack Obama. In addition, Kamala Harris became the first femal Vice President in 2021. Therefore, it is tempting to think that everyone has equal rights and opputunites. There have been som improvements, for example in the number of African-American completing high school and universeity and in the number of African- American in the leading positsions in politics.
