Reconstruction was a period which the Federal Government sent troops down to the Southern States to enforce peace and African american rights. But that came to an end in the 1876 election when republican candidate, Rutherford Hayes, made a compromise with the Democrats. Southern states could now make new state laws that would be prejudice against colored folk, such a law was the Jim Crow Laws.
