U.S. Sectionalism

By KaydenK
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise

The main issue was whether new states would be admitted as free or slave states. In the Missouri Compromise, the North and South were impacted differently because it affected the balance of power in congress. The Missouri Compromise increased tensions by making slavery a national political issue.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis

The Southern states were refusing to pay tariffs. This impacted the U.S. as a whole because it further increased sectionalism and the Southern States were refusing to pay something every other state has to pay. This further increased sectionalism because now the South wasn't paying what other states had to pay further dividing and even aggravating tariff-paying states.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850

The Compromise of 1850 formally created the U.S. into the North and South regions. The South was mostly impacted by this event because with the Compromise of 1850 came the 36/30 line which was the split between the two areas. The North had more territory and had already broken this 36/30 line rule by admitting California as a free state which crossed over the line. This compromise increased sectionalism even more by formally instating the two regions of the U.S. and the division among states.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act

Slavery wasn't allowed in the North so slaves would make a run for the North. Then the Fugitive Slave Act was passed which made it so slave owners could come back and retrieve their slaves. This greatly impacted the North because the purpose was that if there was an African-American in the North they were free, but the South practically got rid of that by getting the Fugitive Slave Act passed. This greatly increased sectionalism because now where slaves are supposed to be free they aren't free.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin

Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book published to convince people that slavery is bad. The American people were impacted in this event because it the book convinced many people that slavery was horrible. On the contrary it felt like an attack on the South which they even considered it treason which further increased sectionalism amongst the North and South.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act

This act introduced a practice called Popular Sovereignty, which allowed new states to choose whether to be free or slave states. This act impacted people in the North and South by possibly disrupting the "balance" created by the Compromise of 1850, which made it so that there were an equal number of free and slave states. This further increased sectionalism between the North and South, causing a disrupted "balance" from the Compromise of 1820.
  • Abraham Lincoln's Election

    Abraham Lincoln's Election

The newly elected president Abraham Lincoln was heavily an abolitionist which goes against the South's very way of life. The South was mostly impacted by Lincoln's Election because he was an abolitionist who wanted to free slaves while keeping the Union together. This event was the final straw for the U.S. because the Southern States seceded after Lincoln's Election. This means that America is now two different countries not just regions.
  • Bleeding Kansas and the Pottawotamie Massacre

Bleeding Kansas and the Pottawotamie Massacre

Pro-slavery citizens were using violence and harassment to try to drive abolitionists out of Kansas. In response, abolitionists resorted to using violence against pro-slavery supporters for an advantage in the election determining whether Kansas would be a free or slave state. This conflict between the two sides contributed to increased sectionalism, resulting in a civil war in Kansas fueled by the fighting between abolitionists and pro-slavery.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision

Dred Scott who is a slave from Missouri got brought over to free states for a long period of time, so he brought his case to court to prove his freedom. Dred Scott and the Supreme Court were mainly affected by this event during the court case. The Supreme Court argued that Dred Scott was property so he shouldn't be able to sue against his owner. This increased sectionalism among people because it disregarded the fact that the North was a free area where he was staying, which angered the North.
  • John Brown's Raid and Trial

    John Brown's Raid and Trial

The issue is taking action to end slavery. This event impacted abolitionists and Slaves. Because now pro-slavery citizens label slaves as violent, Abolitionists are labeled as committing treason against the country. This increased sectionalism between the two sides because now violence has been implemented into this battle getting the U.S. closer to a civil war.
