During the 70s the Boeing 747 was introduced to the UK in 1971 slashing costs of flights. -
Formation of British Airways
in 1974 BEA and BOAC merged to create what is now known as British Airways, they were accused of trying to destroy packaged holidays by upping prices to £400 - £800. -
computerised reservations
In 1982 Thomson Holidays introduced a new computerised reservation system for travel agents which made the booking process easier and created a boost in package holiday sales. -
Home soil travelling
in 1984, 41 million British people holidayed on home soil, this was the first time that there had been a larger number of people holidaying in their own country -
launch of Ryanair
Ryanair was founded in 1984 with the intent to be one of the cheapest airlines in the UK, their prices ranged from £99 - £300, this marked the start of a competition between Ryanair and the legacy carriers in Europe. -
Gulf War
in the 90s, the first gulf war resulted in an economic recession due to the lack of foreign travel. This resulted in the collapse of Britain's second largest holiday group ILG (International Leisure Group). -
Opening of the Channel Tunnel
in 1994 Queen Elizabeth the II and the president of France opened the Channel Tunnel, this revolutionized trading between the UK and France. -

in 1996, due to the advancement of technology there was a large increase in the number of passenger numbers in airports - increased by 85% from 135 million bookings to 251 million. -
Launch of EasyJet
EasyJet was founded in 1995 by Sir Stelios Haji-Loannu to offer low cost fares and it started out by taking flights from Luton to Glasgow and Edinburgh. The following year it launched international flights. -
9/11
following the events of 9/11 there was a large drop in international visitors to the US, there was also a large shift in travelers preferred way of travelling. it caused significant economic damage to the US -
Indian Ocean Earthquake
In 2004 an undersea earthquake caused a number of large tsunami waves, it affected 14 different countries and cause widespread devastation. Many tourists were caught up in the disaster and many had to cancel trips there. The following year the number of tourists to those areas - more specifically Thailand - dipped to 11.6 million but soon climbed back up by 2006. -
Global Recession
in 2008 the world was hit by a financial crisis meaning that many markets had crashed and holidaymakers were dealing with tight budgets. Following this the UK seen an increase in staycations by 17% and a decrease in outbound travel, this only began to increase by 2014 where the number of staycations dropped by 1.3% and the number outbound travelling increased by 4% -
Brexit
Brexit and its effects meant that the European Union saw a number of visitors to the UK fall by 5.3%, -
Covid-19
At the end of 2019 and the beginning of December, the UK travel and Tourism industry saw a decline in visitors. In 2020 the UK received 11.1 million visitors who spent around £6.2 billion which is stated to be a decline of 78% of visits and a 78% decline of spending. This means that between the end of 2019 - 2020 the UK economy suffered a loss of £22.2 billion. -

The growth of social media
Through the growth of social media it has made holiday planning easier and more accessible. From recent surveys around 43% of people currently travelling will not consider a destination without looking it up on social media first, and due to things like TikTok the hashtag "Travel" has over 74.4 billion views and Instagram has over 624 million posts related to travel. These statistics show the impact of social media of travelers and it's influence on the travel industry. -
