    The Great Schism

The Great Schism was the separation of Western and Easten Christians into Catholic and Orthodox churches. This happened because of disputes on who had the most power within the church and whether icons could be used or not. The Pope and the Patriarch eventually broke ties and said the other side was no longer part of the true church. It cemented the permanent division between the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.
