  • Geneva Accords

    Geneva Accords

    The Geneva Accords were an agreement for France and Vietminh to end the fight, this caused Indochina to be divided into three countries, the countries being Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Elections were supposed to be held in 1956 to determine the governments of North and South Vietnam, Diem refused to hold elections though. The reason for this is that he knew he would lose.

    John F. Kennedy Becomes President

    John F. Kennedy became President after winning the election against Nixon. His requirement was to appear tough on communism. So he decided to increase aid and advisors to Vietnam.
  • Diem's Downfall

    Diem's Downfall

    Diem was a Catholic who persecuted the Buddhists. A response for this was Buddhist monks committing self-immolation. He was then overthrown and excited by his generals with U.S. approval. This execution severely weakened the South Vietnamese government and forced the U.S. to get more involved to help the South Vietnamese.

    Gulf of Tonkin Incident

    President Lyndon Johnson says the Vietnamese ships have fired U.S. destroyers. He asks Congress to authorize the use of force to defend the American forces. In 2005 a declassified study stated that a second incident never happened.

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Shortly after the incident, President Lyndon Johnson and the gulf came to the conclusion to make a resolution. The resolution authorized President Johnson to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the U.S. The resolution had authorized to prevent any further aggression.

    The Television War

    At the start of the war, General William Westmoreland continuously declared that the enemy is on the brink of defeat, but the television news reports showed a different story. Every single night the Americans kept seeing many young men dying and wounded, they began doubting the reports from General William. It was difficult to believe the government reports. The Vietnam War was the first televised war because the footage was shown nightly, this lead to an anti-war movement.

    The Tet Offensive

    The Tet Offensive was a series of coordinated surprise attacks by the North Vietnamese Army to the U.S. The VC had managed to attack all major U.S airbuses and many South Vietnam cities, though they failed. Even if it was a huge failure for the VC, it still left many Americans shocked.

    The Kent State Protest

    After the invasion of Cambodia, students in the Kent State University began to protest. They protested as a response to the expansion of war into Cambodia. College protesters were killed by National Guards.
  • Pentagon Papers get Leaked

    Pentagon Papers get Leaked

    The Pentagon papers were a secret study of U.S involvement in Vietnam. The papers had been leaked to the New York Times newspapers, which revealed that the American leaders were lying to Congress. This caused people to start regarding Vietnam.
  • U.S. and North Vietnam Reach Peace

    U.S. and North Vietnam Reach Peace

    The United States and North Vietnam reached a peace agreement with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords. The agreement was intended to end the war by setting up a ceasefire and leading to the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Shortly after, Southern Vietnam had fallen.
