The Underground Railroad was an informal network of safe houses that helped thousands of slaves escape to freedom in the North. This was important to the start of the civil war because it made the conflict between north and South more intense.

Lincoln’s election is when Abraham Lincoln ran for president for the Republican Party, and wanted to end the expansion of slavery. He ended up winning the election, which was important to the start of the Civil War, because people in the Southern states thought that if he was president, it would be bad for the south.

South Carolina was the first state to secede from the U.S. just weeks after the election, believing it’s state rights and the institution of slavery were under threat. This is a huge event for the start of the Civil War because it was the thing that made the other states secede.
